Most vacant homes in the United States are foreclosed properties owned by the banks. There are approximately 18.5 million homes in the U.S that are vacant. To put this number in perspective, there are approximately 3.5 million homeless people living on the streets, 90% of them are veterans. There is about 6 times more empty homes in the U.S than homeless people. If this seems outrageous it's because it absolutely is. Giving away free homes to people may not be the right answer here but clearly there is a growing crisis.
